Why it exists

Mexican coffee production was hit hard by coffee leaf rust, which cut the country's output by up to 70%. Add to that aging coffee plantations, limited access to financing, an increasingly variable and extreme climate, and migration from the countryside to the cities. More and more coffee farmers, especially from the younger generations, are choosing not to continue a family tradition that goes back generations, and are leaving coffee behind.

That is why, in 2014, Exportadora de Café California created Por Más Café: an integrated economic and social development model for smallholder farmers, who grow 90% of the country's coffee. Its vision is to make coffee once again the main driver of the social economy in Mexico's coffee-growing regions.

What we do

Each farmer receives a package of services tailored to their farm. They contribute their work; we take care of the rest.

Renovation

Renovation, rehabilitation and establishment of coffee plantations with rust-resistant varieties.

Nutrition and inputs

Fertilization and quality inputs so the renovated plants reach production.

Technical assistance

Field technicians who visit the farm, plus agronomic and business training.

Financing

Credit and insurance so farmers can invest in their coffee plantations.

Guaranteed purchase

A buyer for the harvest and access to the international coffee market.

Traceability

A record of farmers, plots and lots: coffee is traced from the farm to the customer.
